Parque Lage

Hey hey! Yesterday I went to Parque Lage for the first time ever! It was bigger and even more beautiful than I expected. There are tons of little trails that lead you to some amazing spots - all green and gorgeous. It is only a few blocks away from where I am living now and entry is free so I will definitely be back soon. One of the things I love so much about Rio is how the city is tucked into nature. The mountains and forest are a backdrop to it all. Today is Election Day in Brazil and they elected Bolsonaro, a misogynistic, racist, homophobic, militant man, with little respect for nature I might add. I was biking back from Gávea this evening when it was officially announced that he won and lots of people were yelling and honking (in excitement). After over a decade of one party’s corruption people here are hungry for change, but the alternative is someone who openly spreads hate. It sounds sadly familiar. This world … I don’t understand it. I’ll be here when he begins his term in January so we’ll have to wait and see.

Ei ei! Ontem fui ao Parque Lage pela primeira vez! Era maior e ainda mais bonito do que eu esperava. Há toneladas de pequenas trilhas que levam a alguns pontos surpreendentes - tudo verde e lindo. É apenas a poucos quarteirões de distância de onde eu estou vivendo agora ea entrada é gratuita, então eu definitivamente voltarei em breve. Uma das coisas que eu amo tanto no Rio é como a cidade está escondida na natureza. As montanhas e a floresta são um pano de fundo para tudo isso. Hoje é o dia da eleição no Brasil e eles elegeram Bolsonaro, um homem misógino, racista, homofóbico e militante, com pouco respeito pela natureza que eu poderia acrescentar. Eu estava pedalando de volta da Gávea esta noite quando foi anunciado oficialmente que ele venceu e muitas pessoas estavam gritando e buzinando (em empolgação). Depois de mais de uma década de corrupção de uma parte, as pessoas aqui estão famintas por mudanças, mas a alternativa é alguém que abertamente espalha o ódio. Soa tristemente familiar. Este mundo ... eu não entendo isso. Eu estarei aqui quando ele começar seu mandato em janeiro, então teremos que esperar e ver.

Something Saturday

Dress - Forever 21

Hey babes! It is a beautiful Saturday afternoon. I stayed up late chatting and drinking wine with Ana so I slept in this morning. It was supposed to be rainy today but at the moment it is hot and all blue skies! You never know with the tropics though. It could be pouring in 20 minutes. I started a gym membership this week and I’ve been feeling so good. I took about a month off after I moved out of Long Beach and I thought that maybe walking in the mornings and going to dance twice a week would be sufficient. I was wrong haha! I was feeling so antsy. One day I walked three miles to dance class, took an hour and a half class, and then walked home and still wasn’t sore the next day. That’s when I decided to get a membership … which was a bit tricky without a CPF (Brazilian ID number). The walk there is so pretty too so I’m getting my morning walk AND some sore glutes, so I’m happy! Hope you have a lovely Saturday! 

Ei babes! É uma linda tarde de sábado. Eu fiquei acordada até tarde conversando e bebendo vinho com Ana, então dormi esta manhã. Era suposto estar chuvoso hoje mas no momento está quente e todo o céu azul! Você nunca sabe com os trópicos embora. Pode estar derramando em 20 minutos. Eu comecei uma associação de academia esta semana e estou me sentindo muito bem. Eu levei cerca de um mês de folga depois que eu saí de Long Beach e pensei que talvez andar de manhã e ir dançar duas vezes por semana seria suficiente. Eu estava errado haha! Eu estava me sentindo tão ansioso. Um dia eu andei três milhas até a aula de dança, levei uma hora e meia e depois fui para casa e ainda não estava dolorido no dia seguinte. Foi aí que decidi conseguir uma assinatura ... o que foi um pouco complicado sem um CPF (número de identidade brasileiro). A caminhada até lá é tão bonita, então eu estou fazendo minha caminhada matinal e alguns glúteos doloridos, então estou feliz! Espero que você tenha um lindo sábado!

Veste Rio

Happy Sunday! Yesterday I headed downtown to check out an event called Veste Rio where a bunch of local fashion labels had pop-up shops and sample sales. There were food trucks, a bar, and live music. It was all very close to Museo do Amanhã, which I went to with Dana only a couple weeks ago. After trying on a couple swimsuits at different shops I stumbled on Dajô where the items were marked so low! I found a super cute gingham set that you may have seen on my Instagram story. It was so cheap! And it’s all linen so it will be perfect as it starts to get hotter here in Rio. After I’d made my purchase I got a beer and listened (and danced a bit) to the all female Samba band. It was a lovely Saturday night. Now I’m off to see A Star is Born at the theatre. There’s been so much buzz about this movie so I’m excited to see it!

Feliz domingo! Ontem eu fui ao centro para conferir um evento chamado Veste Rio, onde um monte de grifes de moda locais tinha lojas pop-up e amostras de vendas. Havia caminhões de comida, um bar e música ao vivo. Foi tudo muito próximo do Museo do Amanhã, que eu fui com o Dana apenas algumas semanas atrás. Depois de experimentar alguns trajes de banho em lojas diferentes, tropecei no Dajô, onde os itens estavam tão marcados! Eu encontrei um conjunto de guingão super fofo que você pode ter visto na minha história do Instagram. Foi tão barato! E é tudo de linho, então será perfeito, já que começa a ficar mais quente aqui no Rio. Depois que fiz minha compra, peguei uma cerveja e escutei (e dancei um pouco) para a banda de samba feminina. Foi uma bela noite de sábado. Agora eu vou ver A Star is Born no teatro. Tem havido muito burburinho sobre este filme, então estou ansioso para vê-lo!

Good morning beautiful babes! I woke up early and went for a walk and then came back and made avocado toast for breakfast. The avocados here are GIGANTIC so I used some of the extra to make a hair mask, which I need to go wash out when I’m done with this post. Today is yet another holiday in Brazil so all the stores will be closed today. I think I am going to go to Parque Lage with Ana’s family later today. I somehow never went during the year I lived here so I’m excited to see it for the first time! It’s within walking distance from my new apartment so maybe it will be a new favorite spot to hang. You may recognize it from Snoop Dogg and Pharrell’s video “Beautiful,” a 2002 throwback haha.

Bom dia lindas garotas! Eu acordei cedo e fui caminhar e então voltei e fiz brinde de abacate para o café da manhã. Os abacates aqui são GIGANTES, então eu usei alguns dos extras para fazer uma máscara de cabelo, que eu preciso lavar quando terminar este post. Hoje é mais um feriado no Brasil, então todas as lojas estarão fechadas hoje. Acho que vou ao Parque Lage com a família da Ana hoje mais tarde. De alguma forma eu nunca fui durante o ano em que vivi aqui, então estou ansioso para ver pela primeira vez! Está a uma curta distância do meu novo apartamento, então talvez seja um novo local favorito para pendurar. Hey hey! I hope you’re all doing well. I was having a bit of a frustrating weekend but I’m feeling so much better. My bank card was cloned here (which is super common unfortunately) and I’ve had some trouble getting in touch with my banks in the U.S. It’ll all work out, it’s just a frustrating process that I’ve been through twice already. Yesterday was nice and hot after a week full of rain and I made sure to spend the whole day at the beach. It was glorious. Then today my roommate Ana invited me to her Aunt’s apartment across the street because a lot of her family is visiting from Minas Gerais, a state just inland of Rio. They were so much fun and so welcoming. It was a really lovely day full of good food, good wine, and good conversation. I feel like I have days where my Portuguese feels jolty and fettered and others where it just flows. I have to remind myself that I haven’t spoken Portuguese almost at all in five years, but I want to gallop, not trot! Patience is not one of my many virtues ;).

Ei ei! Espero que você esteja bem. Eu estava tendo um fim de semana frustrante, mas estou me sentindo muito melhor. Meu cartão bancário foi clonado aqui (o que é muito comum infelizmente) e tive problemas para entrar em contato com meus bancos nos EUA. Tudo vai dar certo, é apenas um processo frustrante pelo qual já passei por duas vezes. Ontem estava agradável e quente depois de uma semana cheia de chuva e eu tive certeza passar o dia inteiro na praia. Foi glorioso. Então hoje minha colega de quarto Ana me convidou para o apartamento de sua tia do outro lado da rua porque muitos de sua família do Minas Gerais estão visitando. Eles eram muito divertidos e tão acolhedores. Foi um dia muito agradável cheio de boa comida, bom vinho e boa conversa. Eu sinto que tenho dias em que o meu português se sente sacolejado e acovardado e outros onde simplesmente flui. Eu tenho que me lembrar que eu não falo português quase em cinco anos, mas eu quero galopar, não trotar! Paciência não é uma das minhas muitas virtudes ;).

Happy Friday! In the last 24 hours I’ve almost walked around the entire Lagoa. I ended up walking to Gávea after all and went to dinner at Delírio Tropical, my favorite restaurant in the area. It has this amazing quiche that tastes like pumpkin pie … sounds strange, but it’s SO good. I was so happy they still had it. I also walked around the mall to see what had changed and while I was strolling around the 2nd floor a man fell into the top of the escalator and the glass shattered. It made the craziest noice and everyone ran to see what had happened. Everyone was fine in the end, but it was quite a scare. It rained on my way home, but my new roommate Ana loaned me a nice big umbrella so I arrived back home unscathed :). This morning I went on a walk after breakfast in the opposite direction. Today is a holiday so there were lots of families having little outings along the way. I even got to see a little girl learn how to ride a bike. So cute. 

Feliz sexta-feira! Nas últimas 24 horas eu quase andei por toda a Lagoa. Acabei indo para a Gávea e fui jantar no Delírio Tropical, meu restaurante favorito na região. Tem esse quiche incrível que tem gosto de torta de abóbora ... soa estranho, mas é tão bom. Eu estava tão feliz que eles ainda tinham. Eu também caminhei ao redor do centro comercial para ver o que tinha mudado e enquanto eu estava passeando ao redor do 2º chão um homem caiu no topo da escada rolante e o vidro quebrou. Fez o barulho mais louco e todos correram para ver o que havia acontecido. Todos estavam bem no final, mas foi um susto. Choveu no meu caminho para casa, mas minha nova colega de quarto, Ana, me emprestou um grande guarda-chuva, então eu voltei para casa ilesa :). Esta manhã eu fui em uma caminhada depois do café da manhã na direção oposta. Hoje é um feriado assim havia muitas famílias que têm pequenos passeios ao longo do caminho. Eu até consegui ver uma menininha aprendendo a andar de bicicleta. Tão bonitinho.

Maroon Tune

Hello sweet things! Today is rainy but, in true tropical form, I still have my desk fan running. I woke up early hoping to go for that walk around the Lagoa, but it was quite wet outside so I opted out. I made myself a big bowl of oatmeal and finished watching Outlander - a new show I’ve been loving. I should probably be finding some cool Brazilian shows to dive into. I am headed out soon for a little walk while the rain has subsided. I have been wanting to go to Gávea, the neighborhood I lived in the last time I was in Rio, but today might not be the best day for that. I caught sight of the little plaza the other day on my way somewhere else and I teared up a bit. I’d like to see what has changed and what hasn’t. One of the things I’d also like to visit is PUC, the university I attended. I want to go watch the monkeys that live on the property, but they’re probably hiding out with all this rain. I wish I had some proper rain shoes but my sneakers will have to do.

Olá coisas doces! Hoje é chuvoso, mas, na forma tropical, ainda tenho meu ventilador de mesa funcionando. Eu acordei cedo esperando ir para aquela caminhada ao redor da Lagoa, mas estava bastante molhado fora assim eu optei fora. Eu fiz uma grande tigela de aveia e terminei de assistir a Outlander - um novo show que eu tenho amado. Eu provavelmente deveria estar encontrando alguns shows brasileiros legais para mergulhar. Eu estou indo em breve para uma pequena caminhada enquanto a chuva diminuiu. Eu tenho vontade de ir para a Gávea, o bairro onde morei na última vez que estive no Rio, mas hoje pode não ser o melhor dia para isso. Eu avistei a pequena praça no outro dia a caminho de outro lugar e eu rasguei um pouco. Eu gostaria de ver o que mudou e o que não mudou. Uma das coisas que eu também gostaria de visitar é a PUC, a universidade que frequentei. Eu quero ir ver os macacos que vivem na propriedade, mas eles provavelmente estão se escondendo com toda essa chuva. Eu gostaria de ter alguns sapatos de chuva adequados, mas meus tênis terão que fazer.

New Apartment!

Hello hello!I am very happy to inform you that I have found an apartment here in Rio! The last two weeks I was staying at a hostel in Copacabana and though it was very fun and I met a lot of really nice people, it is SO nice to have my own room again. The location of the apartment in amazing: close to the botanical gardens and the lake. I would like to make walking along the lake a regular morning routine. It isn’t a touristy area as well so things are cheaper and it feels less hectic. I also have a little personal terrace off my room and there is a little patio off the living room, where these photos were taken. I was so tired yesterday after moving because I went out with some friends from the hostel to celebrate my last night there. It was a boat party that took us across the bay to Niterói, all the while playing music and serving caipirinhas. I had a great time dancing with everyone. The only downside was being stuck next to all the people who smoke cigarettes. I still have a cough after being sick so I’ve been trying to avoid being around smoke but there was nowhere to go that night haha. Dancing on a boat in the ocean was a great way to celebrate that I officially live here now! I’m so grateful. Now I need to go get some lunch and then some groceries (never go shopping hungry ;). 

Estou muito feliz em informar que encontrei um apartamento aqui no Rio! As duas últimas semanas eu estava hospedada em um albergue em Copacabana e apesar de ter sido muito divertido e eu conheci muitas pessoas legais, é tão bom ter meu próprio quarto novamente. A localização do apartamento em incrível: perto dos Jardim Botânico e do Lagoa. Eu gostaria de fazer uma caminhada ao longo do lago uma rotina matinal regular. Também não é uma área turística, por isso as coisas são mais baratas e menos agitadas. Eu também tenho um pequeno terraço pessoal fora do meu quarto e há um pequeno pátio fora da sala de estar, onde estas fotos foram tiradas. Eu estava tão cansado ontem depois de me mudar porque eu saí com alguns amigos do albergue para celebrar minha última noite lá. Foi uma festa de barco que nos levou pela baía até Niterói, tocando música e servindo caipirinhas. Eu me diverti muito dançando com todos. A única desvantagem estava sendo preso ao lado de todas as pessoas que fumam cigarros. Eu ainda tenho tosse depois de estar doente, então eu tenho tentado evitar fumar, mas não havia para onde ir naquela noite haha. Dançar em um barco no oceano foi uma ótima maneira de celebrar que eu moro oficialmente aqui agora! Eu estou tão agradecido. Agora eu preciso ir almoçar e fazer compras (nunca vá às compras com fome ;).

Museo do Amanhã

Yesterday I spent the day with my friend Dana and her little family. She and I studied abroad together here in Rio five years ago but she moved back a while later and ended up getting married and having a baby. She lives back in her hometown of Chicago but it just so happened that she would be bringing her baby to Brazil for the first time this week! It was so lovely to reconnect with her. She has always been someone that makes everything more fun. And meeting her husband and baby was icing on the cake. We met at Confeitaria Colombo which is a historical landmark here in Rio. It opened originally in 1894 and still stands in its original building. It’s known for its pastries and for its chic reputation; until 1970 men had to wear full suits and women had to be wearing hats in order to dine there. I had a delicious hazelnut pastry. After our little sugar rush we walked to Museu do Amanhã to admire the building and all the surrounding murals. The day ended in Santa Teresa, an adorable neighborhood above downtown on a steep hill. We shared a big pot of moqueca which is a seafood curry of sorts with coconut milk, spicy oil, and creamed rice. The museum didn’t exist when I was here five years ago and I hadn’t been back to Santa Teresa in a long time so it was nice to mix the old and the new. I hope you’re all having a lovely day, wherever you are. 

Ontem passei o dia com minha amiga Dana e sua pequena família. Ela e eu estudamos no exterior juntos aqui no Rio há cinco anos, mas ela voltou um tempo depois e acabou se casando e tendo um bebê. Ela mora em sua cidade natal, Chicago, mas aconteceu que ela estaria trazendo seu bebê para o Brasil pela primeira vez esta semana! Foi tão lindo se reconectar com ela. Ela sempre foi alguém que torna tudo mais divertido. E conhecer o marido e o bebê era a cereja no bolo. Nós nos conhecemos na Confeitaria Colombo, que é um marco histórico aqui no Rio. Foi inaugurado originalmente em 1894 e ainda está em seu prédio original. É conhecido por seus doces e por sua reputação chique; até 1970, os homens tinham que usar ternos completos e as mulheres tinham que usar chapéus para jantar lá. Eu tinha uma deliciosa massa de avelã. Depois da correria do açúcar, caminhamos até o Museu do Amanhã para admirar o prédio e todos os murais da redondeza. O dia terminou em Santa Teresa, um bairro adorável acima do centro da cidade em uma colina íngreme. Nós tínhamos compartilhado uma panela grande de moqueca que é um caril de frutos do mar ou tipos com leite de coco, óleo picante, e arroz chamuscado. O museu não existia quando eu estava aqui há cinco anos e eu não voltava a Santa Teresa há muito tempo, então foi legal misturar o antigo e o novo. Espero que todos vocês tenham um ótimo dia, onde quer que estejam.

To Arpoador

Oi amores! I am finally feeling better! My first day without a fever and a sore throat I took a walk to Arpoador, the rock that marks the separation between Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. You used to be able to walk across the sand to it but now there is a little park that you have to walk through. The scene was perfect, like a movie set, with all the brightly colored umbrellas and bikinis. Occasionally one of the many surfers would catch a wave and then dive back into the glowing water. I bumped into someone else from the hostel while I was sitting there and we walked back together. Later in the evening I found the dance studio I used to go to and took an African dance class. I’m a bit sore and happy about it. My body and mind needed it! 

Oi amores! Finalmente estou me sentindo melhor! No primeiro dia sem febre e dor de garganta, dei uma caminhada até o Arpoador, a rocha que marca a separação entre as praias de Copacabana e Ipanema. Você costumava ser capaz de atravessar a areia, mas agora há um pequeno parque que você tem que percorrer. A cena era perfeita, como um set de filmagem, com todos os guarda-chuvas e biquínis de cores vivas. Ocasionalmente, um dos muitos surfistas pegava uma onda e mergulhava de volta na água brilhante. Eu bati em outra pessoa do albergue enquanto eu estava sentado lá e voltamos juntos. Mais tarde, à noite, encontrei o estúdio de dança que eu frequentava e fiz uma aula de dança africana. Estou um pouco dolorida e feliz com isso. Meu corpo e minha mente precisavam disso!

Parada do Orgulho

Hey there beauties. You may have seen on my instagram that I got super sick this week. Name a symptom and I probably had it at some point in the last five days. I’m finally feeling like I’m getting better. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak! It has put a little damper on me finding an apartment but everything happens for a reason. I keep thinking back to how hard it was for me to find a place in Long Beach, but the apartment I eventually found could not have been better. Sometimes you just have to be patient and know that good things are coming your way. Timing is everything. On Sunday I escaped from bed for the afternoon to accompany Taina and Max to the Pride Parade along Copacabana Beach. Some pretty famous pop stars performed like Luisa Sonza and I definitely enjoyed myself. Taina is from a different part of Brazil but she’s hoping to move to Rio soon. I hope it works out because she was so much fun! Whenever I didn’t understand something she would patiently explain. I so appreciate that! Well, I’m going to go get some lunch and then come back and rest more. I will be on antibiotics until Saturday so I just want to take it easy and make sure I really kick this sickness!

Oi belezas. Você pode ter visto no meu instagram que eu fiquei super doente esta semana. Cite um sintoma e provavelmente o tive em algum momento nos últimos cinco dias. Finalmente estou sentindo que estou melhorando. Eu posso ver a luz no fim do túnel, por assim dizer! Isso me atrapalhou em encontrar um apartamento, mas tudo acontece por um motivo. Eu continuo pensando em como foi difícil para mim encontrar um lugar em Long Beach, mas o apartamento que eu finalmente encontrei não poderia ter sido melhor. Às vezes você só tem que ser paciente e saber que as coisas boas estão vindo em sua direção. Tempo é tudo. No domingo escapei da cama para a tarde para acompanhar Tainá e Max na Parada do Orgulho ao longo da praia de Copacabana. Alguns pop stars muito famosos se apresentaram como Luisa Sonza e eu definitivamente me diverti. Taina é de uma parte diferente do Brasil, mas ela espera mudar para o Rio em breve. Espero que funcione porque ela foi muito divertida! Sempre que eu não entendia algo que ela explicaria pacientemente. Eu aprecio muito isso! Bem, eu vou almoçar e depois voltar e descansar mais. Eu vou estar em antibióticos até sábado, então eu só quero ter calma e ter certeza que eu realmente chuto esta doença!

Small Update

Top - Forever 21

Hi beauties! I am just checking in to say that I probably won’t be able to blog much until I have my own place. The hostel I’m staying in is FULL and I’d rather keep my computer and camera in my suitcase for now. I’m a Starbucks right now and the internet is so slow. Hopefully I can upload a photo to this post! Anyways, I got a sore throat yesterday and have stocked up on Brazilian medicine. I have a couple leads on places but nothing concrete yet. I’ve had a lot of fun getting to know the people at the hostel. They’re from all over Brazil and the rest of the world and I’ve gotten you to speak a lot of Portuguese and in-turn helped some people with their English when they ask. My to-do list for the next couple days is:

1. Continue the apartment search

2. Look into jobs

3. Find the old dance studio I used to go to

4. Sleep (easier said that done in a hostel)

5. Get a Brazilian phone - not sure if I want to get a pay-as-you-go phone or one with some internet capabilities

6. Beach!

Oi belezas! Estou apenas checando para dizer que provavelmente não vou poder blogar muito até ter meu próprio lugar. A pousada em que estou hospedado é COMPLETA e prefiro manter meu computador e minha câmara na mala por enquanto. Estou em um Starbucks agora e a internet é tão lenta. Espero poder enviar uma foto para este post! De qualquer forma, eu tenho uma dor de garganta ontem e estocado sobre a medicina brasileira. Eu tenho um casal leva em lugares, mas nada concreto ainda. Eu me diverti muito conhecendo as pessoas no albergue. Eles são de todo o Brasil e do resto do mundo e estou falando muito português e, em resposta, ajudou algumas pessoas com o inglês quando perguntaram. Minha lista de tarefas para os próximos dias é:

1. Continue a pesquisa de apartamentos

2. Procure empregos

3. Encontre o estúdio de dança que eu costumava ir

4. Sono (mais fácil disse que feito em um albergue)

5. Obtenha um telefone brasileiro - não tenho certeza se quero obter um telefone pré-pago ou um com alguns recursos de internet

6. Praia!

Ready Set Rio!

Boa tarde babes! I arrived in Rio this morning, found my hostel, dropped off my stuff, and took a long walk along the beach with açaí in-hand! I felt so calm driving into Rio. So happy, so excited, and just relaxed. I got so excited after my first flight from San Francisco to Miami because most of the people waiting for the flight to Rio were Brazilian and I got a little preview of being around only Portuguese. I’m ready for a shower and a nap and a caipirinha, so I’m off to take care of that! I just wanted to check-in and say I made it safely! 

Boa tarde gatinhas! Cheguei ao Rio esta manhã, encontrei meu albergue, larguei minhas coisas e dei um longo passeio pela praia com o açaí na mão! Eu me senti tão calmo dirigindo para o Rio. Tão feliz, tão animado e só relaxado. Fiquei tão animado depois do meu primeiro voo de São Francisco para Miami porque a maioria das pessoas que esperavam o vôo para o Rio era brasileira e eu tive uma pequena prévia de estar perto de apenas portugueses. Estou pronta para um banho, uma soneca e uma caipirinha, então vou cuidar disso! Eu só queria fazer o check-in e dizer que fiz isso com segurança!

I just finally made the post about the church and vineyard which you can see below. The wifi at my mom’s is so slow so I have to head to a nearby coffee shop for some speedy internet. I thought I’d do another quick update while I’m here since I’ve been sitting on these photos Jenelle took of me in her super photogenic backyard. I had an amazing dinner last night at my friend Cecilia and Bruno’s. Bruno is from Brasil and Cecilia and he met there. It was exactly what I needed. I feel particularly strange today … emotional in general. I’ve been sitting on this egg, so to speak, for about five months and it’s about to hatch! I’m ready to see and explore what comes next. The anticipation has a jittery sort of energy, like new love. I’m spending tonight with another group of friends which will hopefully calm these nerves. I feel like I’m in Chico to scoop up some love for my journey. I’m lucky to have this place and all the people it houses.

Acabei de fazer o post sobre a igreja e a vinha que você pode ver abaixo. O wifi na casa da minha mãe é tão lento, então eu tenho que ir a um café nas proximidades para uma internet rápida. Pensei em fazer outra atualização rápida enquanto estiver aqui desde que estou sentada nessas fotos que Jenelle tirou de mim em seu quintal super fotogênico. Eu tive um jantar maravilhoso ontem à noite na minha amiga Cecilia e Bruno. Bruno é do Brasil e Cecilia e ele conheceu lá. Era exatamente o que eu precisava. Eu me sinto particularmente estranho hoje ... emocional em geral. Eu estou sentada neste ovo, por assim dizer, por cerca de cinco meses e está prestes a nascer! Estou pronto para ver e explorar o que vem depois. A antecipação tem um tipo de energia nervosa, como um novo amor. Estou passando esta noite com outro grupo de amigos que, esperamos, acalmará esses nervos. Eu sinto que estou em Chico para pegar um pouco de amor pela minha jornada. Tenho sorte de ter este lugar e todas as pessoas que ele abriga.

New Clairvaux Vineyard

Hi there! On Wednesday Jenelle, Kelly, Julia and I took a trip out to the New Clairvaux Vineyard, about 20 minutes outside of Chico. The wine was so delicious! I would have bought a bottle if I was staying in The States longer. The vineyard is also a monestary and is home to a small group of monks. The church on the property is absolutely beautiful! We got to listen to the monks sing and after they left we explored! We happened to be there while the man who designed and built the church was fixing something and he told us all about the history. It’s a relatively new church but the stones used to build it are over 200 years old and were originally imported from Spain. If you look closely there are symbols carved into the stone. He said the stone makers were paid per stone so they would mark the ones they had completed in order to be paid at the end of the week. The designer or “master mason” purposefully pointed these markings inwards and placed them at eye-level so this history could be remembered. Some places just have good vibes and this church was one of them. Buildings like this one, crafted with so much attention to detail, aren’t made often anymore. It was lovely to wander around with a little wine buzz ;).

Olá! Na quarta-feira, Jenelle, Kelly, Julia e eu fizemos uma viagem ao vinhedo New Clairvaux, a cerca de 20 minutos de Chico. O vinho estava tão delicioso! Eu teria comprado uma garrafa se eu fosse ficar nos Estados Unidos por mais tempo. A vinha é também um mosteiro e é o lar de um pequeno grupo de monges. A igreja na propriedade é absolutamente linda! Nós conseguimos ouvi-los cantar e quando eles foram deixados, nós exploramos! Aconteceu que estávamos lá enquanto o homem que projetou e construiu a igreja estava consertando algo e nos contou tudo sobre a história. É uma igreja relativamente nova, mas as pedras usadas para construí-la têm mais de 200 anos e foram originalmente importadas da Espanha. Se você olhar de perto, há símbolos esculpidos na pedra. Ele disse que os fabricantes de pedras eram pagos por pedra para que eles marcassem os que tinham concluído para serem pagos no final da semana. O designer ou "mestre pedreiro" propositalmente apontou essas marcas para dentro e as colocou ao nível dos olhos para que essa história pudesse ser lembrada. Alguns lugares só têm boas vibrações e esta igreja era uma delas. Edifícios como este, criados com tanta atenção aos detalhes, não são mais feitos com frequência. Foi adorável para passear com um pouco de vinho buzz ;).

Golden Grove

Good morning babes! I left my purse at Jenelle’s place yesterday so I just biked over to get it and now I’m back at Naked Lounge waiting for my friend Caira. We’re having a little tea date in the park! Yesterday’s errands didn’t go quite as planned but I still got a lot done. I got a few things that I needed from Sephora, got some underwear from Victoria’s Secret, and then hit up the amazing summer sale at Forever 21. I definitely don’t need more clothes to bring but it’s perfect timing to shop for Rio because all the summer clothes are on sale this time of year! I got a red dress with little tie details on the arms and a white eyelet lace top. The dress was only $2 and it’s my favorite color! I couldn’t resist!! The last time I went to Brazil I packed so badly. I brought a bunch of things that I never ended up wearing … like bodycon dresses and six-inch heels haha. I never liked wearing those things but for some reason I thought I would there?? Rio is all cobblestone - so not so good for heels. Plus, wearing heels cuts down on one’s ability to partake in spontaneous adventures, and who wants that?! I feel like I used to buy clothes for an imaginary me and I’ve thankfully outgrown that. I’ve figured out what I like and what I feel best in and now I’m just coasting. The only problem is that this time I want to bring all these things I wish I’d brought last time and I don’t know if I’ll have room or how many suitcases to bring. One big one and two carry ons? One big, one medium, and two carry ons?? Is that excessive? Eek!

Bom dia babes! Eu deixei minha bolsa na casa de Jenelle ontem, então eu simplesmente pedi para ir e agora estou de volta ao Naked Lounge esperando pela minha amiga Caira. Estamos fazendo um cházinho no parque! Os recados de ontem não foram tão planejados, mas ainda tenho muito trabalho feito. Eu peguei algumas coisas que eu precisava da Sephora, peguei algumas roupas íntimas da Victoria's Secret, e depois acertei na incrível venda de verão na Forever 21. Eu definitivamente não preciso de mais roupas para trazer, mas é o momento perfeito para comprar o Rio porque todas as roupas de verão estão à venda nesta época do ano! Eu tenho um vestido vermelho com pequenos detalhes de gravata nos braços e uma blusa de renda branca. O vestido custava apenas 2 dólares e é a minha cor favorita! Eu não pude resistir !! A última vez que fui ao Brasil, fiz as malas. Eu trouxe um monte de coisas que eu nunca acabei usando ... como vestidos de bodycon e saltos de seis polegadas haha. Eu nunca gostei de usar essas coisas, mas por algum motivo eu pensei que iria lá ?? O Rio é todo empedrado - então não é tão bom para os saltos. Além disso, usar saltos reduz a capacidade de participar de aventuras espontâneas e quem quer isso ?! Eu sinto que eu costumava comprar roupas para mim imaginário e felizmente eu superei isso. Eu descobri o que eu gosto e o que eu sinto melhor e agora estou apenas indo embora. O único problema é que desta vez eu quero trazer todas essas coisas que eu gostaria de ter trazido da última vez e não sei se vou ter espaço ou quantas malas levar. Um grande e dois carrega? Um grande, um médio e dois carregamentos? Isso é excessivo? Eek!

Café da Manhã

This is a quick ‘hello’ and ‘good morning!’ My mom gave me the car to use ‘til one o’clock today so I can run some errands. I’ve already dropped two pairs of shoes off at the … cobbler?? My favorite brown sandals and my 2 inch nude heels are finally falling apart. They both go with everything so I’ve worn them quite a bit. I’d like them to be in tip-top shape for Rio so hopefully they’ll be extra sturdy. I had an hour to kill before Sephora and Ulta Beauty opened up so I came to Upper Crust for breakfast. I need new mascara and setting powder and … I made a list last night so hopefully I didn’t forget anything. That castor oil that I used in my hair was SO hard to wash out. I had to wear my hair in a bun yesterday because even after using twice as much shampoo as usual, barely any of the oil washed out. I guess my hair got an extra day of conditioning! I washed it again this morning and it all came out this time. My scalp has been so dry and last night my mom’s friend Robin gave me some black soap and a cream to use overnight with lots of good stuff like shea butter, cocoa butter, calendula infused olive oil etc. I’m excited to try it out! She also recommended I do a homemade deep conditioner once a week with eggs, avocado, honey, coconut oil, and even some mayo. With all the swimming in the ocean I plan to do this is probably a good idea. The salt can dry everything out so quickly! My hair feels extra soft today though.

Este é um rápido "olá" e "bom dia!" Minha mãe me deu o carro para usar até às 1h de hoje para que eu possa fazer algumas coisas. Já deixei dois pares de sapatos no… sapateiro? Minhas sandálias marrons favoritas e meus saltos nus de 2 polegadas estão finalmente caindo aos pedaços. Ambos combinam com tudo, então eu os usei muito. Eu gostaria que eles estivessem em ótima forma para o Rio, então espero que eles sejam mais resistentes. Eu tive uma hora para matar antes que Sephora e Ulta Beauty abrissem, então eu vim para Upper Crust no café da manhã. Eu preciso de um novo rímel e colocar pó e ... Eu fiz uma lista na noite passada, então eu não me esqueci de nada. O óleo de mamona que eu usei no meu cabelo era tão difícil de lavar. Eu tive que usar meu cabelo em um coque ontem, porque mesmo depois de usar o dobro do xampu de sempre, quase nenhum óleo foi lavado. Eu acho que meu cabelo tem um dia extra de condicionamento! Lavei novamente esta manhã e tudo saiu desta vez. Meu couro cabeludo estava tão seco e ontem à noite amigo da minha mãe Robin me deu um pouco de sabão preto e um creme para usar durante a noite com muita coisa boa, como manteiga de carité, manteiga de cacau, azeite de infusão de calêndula, etc. Estou animado para experimentá-lo ! Ela também recomendou que eu fizesse um condicionador profundo caseiro uma vez por semana com ovos, abacate, mel, óleo de coco e até mesmo alguns maionese. Com toda a natação no oceano eu planejo fazer isso é provavelmente uma boa idéia. O sal pode secar tudo tão rapidamente! Meu cabelo parece muito macio hoje.

Olá! I am having a lazy morning … just caught up on last night’s episode of Insecure. Yesterday’s hike with Ceci was really nice. We hiked for about three hours in Upper Park. She lived in Brasil for three years so it’s so nice to talk to someone who understands where I’m at and how exciting this move is. The hike ended in a quick dip in the creek. The water has gotten so cold but it felt amazing after a long hike in the peak heat of the day. I don’t have as many plans this week. I leave in a week basically so the biggest thing on my agenda is just stocking up on things I may need … makeup and hot sauce topping the list :). Gotta have your priorities haha. I did an oil treatment on my hair overnight so I need to go wash it out. I used castor oil this time (last time I used coconut oil) and the consistency is so much thicker! It was kind of hard to work it through my hair, but it promotes hair growth so I thought I’d try it out. Chico is extremely dry and my skin and hair have been feeling the effects. Lots of moisturizing! But I’m about to be in ALL the humidity :))) 

Olá! Estou tendo uma manhã preguiçosa ... acabei de pegar o episódio de Inseguro da noite anterior. A caminhada de ontem com a Ceci foi muito legal. Nós caminhamos por cerca de três horas no Upper Park. Ela morou no Brasil por três anos, então é muito legal conversar com alguém que entende onde eu estou e como isso é emocionante. A caminhada terminou em um rápido mergulho no riacho. A água ficou tão fria, mas pareceu incrível depois de uma longa caminhada no calor do pico do dia. Eu não tenho tantos planos esta semana. Eu saio em uma semana, basicamente, então a maior coisa na minha agenda é apenas estocar coisas que eu possa precisar ... maquiagem e molho quente no topo da lista :). Tenho que ter suas prioridades haha. Eu fiz um tratamento com óleo no meu cabelo durante a noite, então eu preciso ir lavar. Eu usei óleo de mamona desta vez (da última vez eu usei óleo de coco) e a consistência é muito mais grossa! Foi difícil trabalhar com o meu cabelo, mas isso promove o crescimento do cabelo, então eu pensei em testá-lo. Chico é extremamente seco e minha pele e cabelos estão sentindo os efeitos. Muita hidratação! Mas eu estou com toda a umidade :)))

Olive Orchard

Hey there loves! Julia and I went on a little mission yesterday. We were trying to find Bald Rock, a big rock formation with craters like the moon, but my GPS took us only halfway and then told us we were there. Luckily we ended up at a visitors center that had directions that we might use on a future day. On the way home we pulled off into some olive orchards to take a few shots. I was supposed to wake up bright and early for a hike with my friend Ceci but our ride fell through last-minute so we are going on a smaller hike in an hour or so. I just need to eat some lunch and slather on some sunscreen before she comes to swoop me up! 

Ei ai ama! Julia e eu fomos em uma pequena missão ontem. Nós estávamos tentando achar Rocha Bald, uma formação de pedra grande com crateras como a lua, mas meu GPS só nos levou no meio do caminho e então nos falou nós estávamos lá. Felizmente acabamos em um centro de visitantes que tinha direções que poderíamos usar em um dia futuro. A caminho de casa, saímos em alguns pomares de oliva para tirar algumas fotos. Eu deveria acordar cedo e bem cedo para uma caminhada com minha amiga Ceci, mas nosso passeio caiu no último minuto, então vamos fazer uma caminhada em uma hora. Eu só preciso comer um pouco de almoço e slather em algum protetor solar antes que ela venha me atacar!

Busy Bee

Hey there loves! These photos were taken in my Mamma’s backyard yesterday. She always has a yard bursting with flowers and fruit, which definitely keeps the bees happy. Today she and I are having a lunch/sewing date. I bought an off-the-shoulder Hawaiian print dress at the thrift store last month with the intent of turning it into a matching crop-top and skirt set. My mom grew up partially in Spain and had to take a sewing class daily. As a result, she and all her sisters are amazing seamstresses. It’s a skill I wish I’d studied more from her, so I try to find little projects that she can help me with. Later today I am going to my old high school’s football game to watch my youngest brother Eli play baritone saxophone in the marching band. He is so musically talented! And in terms of my general state of mind … Brasil feels so close! Today I checked the weather app on my phone to compare and it doesn’t quite cover the week I will be there, but almost! Looks like high 70s/low 80s and mixture of thunder storms and of course, SUN! It’s so nice that I will just be diving into another summer and skipping the colder months here. Perfect timing ;).

Oi amores! Essas fotos foram tiradas no quintal de minha mãe ontem. Ela sempre tem um quintal repleto de flores e frutas, o que definitivamente deixa as abelhas felizes. Hoje ela e eu estamos tendo um almoço / data de costura. Eu comprei um vestido estampado havaiano sem mangas no brechó no mês passado com a intenção de transformá-lo em um top de colheita e saia combinando. Minha mãe cresceu parcialmente na Espanha e teve que fazer uma aula de costura diariamente. Como resultado, ela e todas as suas irmãs são incríveis costureiras. É uma habilidade que eu gostaria de ter estudado mais dela, então tento encontrar pequenos projetos que ela possa me ajudar. Mais tarde, hoje, vou ao jogo de futebol do meu antigo colégio para ver meu irmão mais novo, Eli, tocar saxofone barítono na banda marcial. Ele é tão talentoso musicalmente! E em termos do meu estado geral de espírito… o Brasil se sente tão próximo! Hoje eu verifiquei o aplicativo de previsão do tempo no meu telefone para comparar e ele não cobre a semana em que estarei lá, mas quase! Parece alta 70s / baixa 80s e mistura de trovoadas e claro, SOL! É tão legal que eu esteja mergulhando em outro verão e pulando os meses mais frios aqui. Momento ideal ;).
